Legal Update for New Supervisors
Newly promoted and Sworn and Non-Sworn Supervisors are tasked with supervising various probation officer employees, both sworn and not sworn. To properly supervise these employees, the supervisor needs to be aware of the regular laws pertaining to employees, but also the specialized laws that apply to peace officers in the State of California, e.g. POBAR. This 4-hour course is designed to equip supervisors with the tools necessary to make sure that not only the department is protected, but the employee too. The training includes information on the Meyers-Milas-Brown Act (MMBA), Equal Employment Opportunity rules (EEO), and Peace Officer Bill of Rights (POBAR). The training will also educate the student on the process and steps of Skelly Hearing, Risk Management, and an Update of relevant state and federal laws as they pertain to employee hiring, promotion, and supervision. The training will be conducted using lectures, facilitated discussions, and hands-on practicum; students will have an opportunity to explore and apply the lessons learned in this course.
