Mental Health and Firearms

This 8-hour Mental Health and Firearms course aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to conduct investigations of mental health and firearm ownership. Through interactive and practical instruction, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the laws, regulations, and procedures related to mental health issues and firearm ownership. In addition to exploring topics such as who cannot own or possess a firearm, relevant laws and prohibitions, and determination of firearm eligibility, this course will specifically emphasize two critical areas: proper documentation of findings in a mental health and firearm investigation and the completion of a search warrant to collect firearms from a subject. Participants will learn the essential techniques and guidelines for documenting their investigative findings accurately and thoroughly. They will develop the skills to effectively report and record items collected, safeguarded evidence, subject interviews, supporting documents, and medications relevant to mental health and firearm violations. This emphasis on comprehensive documentation will ensure participants can maintain clear, organized, and legally sound records throughout their investigative processes. Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on facilitating a student-centered learning experience. Participants will actively engage in discussions, case studies, and practical exercises to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. The course will foster a collaborative and interactive environment, encouraging participants to share their experiences, perspectives, and insights to enrich the learning process.
